Beyond, the valley narrows between dark mountain walls toward the lake. Machell worked the whole scene in grey wash on buff paper, on a sheet about 31 × 40 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north.
