Lough Croaghaun sits at the western edge of Achill Island — one of the highest sea cliffs in Ireland dropping sheer into the Atlantic below. Raymond McGrath painted it with the stillness of someone who understood that some landscapes don't need drama added to them.
The water is dark and quiet. The land holds its weight. This is the west of Ireland as it actually is — not performed for a postcard, but observed by a painter who knew how to look.
Raymond McGrath (1903–1977) is better known as an architect — he served as Principal Architect of the Office of Public Works and shaped some of Ireland's most significant public buildings. But he was a serious painter too, and works like this one show why the National Gallery of Ireland collected him.
