About the Artist

Mainie Jellett (1897–1944) grew up in Dublin's privileged circles but rejected the expected path. She trained in Paris under André Lhote and Cubist Albert Gleizes, returning to Ireland determined to prove abstract art belonged here too. Her work provoked outcry from the conservative Irish establishment—the Archbishop called it blasphemous—yet she never flinched. Jellett spent her short life fighting for Irish modernism, leaving a legacy that shaped everything that came after.
