A woman absorbed in a private moment, painted during O'Conor's Paris years. By this period he had left Brittany behind and turned to interior and figure subjects — quiet, intimate scenes handled with the rich colour and loose brushwork he had developed among the Post-Impressionists. The mirror, the reflection, the warm interior light: it is a painting about looking, made by a painter working at close range and without an audience in mind.

Roderic O'Conor (1860–1940) was born in Roscommon and spent most of his working life in France. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
