Achill Horses (1941) by Mainie Jellett – Canvas Print

Oil on canvas, 61 x 92 cm. By the early 1940s Jellett had moved away from pure abstraction toward a figurative style that carried both realist and cubist influences. Part of what drove the shift was her encounter with Chinese art at a Royal Academy exhibition in London in 1935; she travelled to Achill soon after, and found in the island's "peace and aloofness" a quality answering the natural rhythm she admired in that tradition.

The Achill paintings that followed treat familiar subjects with the decorative subtlety she took from Chinese art and the ordered structure of her cubism — a sharp contrast to how the west of Ireland was being painted by landscapists like Paul Henry and Charles Lamb. Achill Horses is the most celebrated of them, combining a colourist's judgement with the sense of order underpinning all her abstract work. It was bequeathed to the National Gallery of Ireland in 1978.

Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
