Lavery painted this in 1884, during his early years studying in Paris, at the artists' colony of Grez-sur-Loing near Fontainebleau — a village where young painters set up easels in the surrounding fields to work en plein air. Larger and more ambitious than anything he'd attempted before, the painting was heavily influenced by Jules Bastien-Lepage and meant to show off everything Lavery had just learned in France.
The composition splits into three distinct passages, each painted with a different technique: a young girl seated on a wheelbarrow beside a watering can, an older girl leaning on a fence between the trees, and both of them watching a boy out on the river in a boat, oar in hand, with a stone bridge behind him.
The painting is held by National Museums NI (Ulster Museum), catalogue number BELUM.U67, and was included in the exhibition Light From The West.
