The sitter is Marie Feller, an Italian singer and close friend of the artist, painted while Purser was visiting fellow artist Louise Breslau in Paris. Seated at a small table, Feller is captured in a moment of introspection, her expression subdued and abstracted. A cup placed across her lap subtly cuts the composition, lending the scene an informal, modern quality that was highly unusual in Irish portraiture of the period.
Art historians have long noted the influence of Edgar Degas, whom Purser greatly admired. The mood of quiet melancholy, or ennui, and the cropped, intimate composition recall Degas’ Parisian interiors such as L’Absinthe. Yet the painting remains distinctly Purser’s own — restrained, psychologically perceptive, and focused entirely on the inner life of the sitter.
Today held in the National Gallery of Ireland, Le Petit Déjeuner stands as a key work from Purser’s formative Paris years, created before her later achievements as founder of An Túr Gloine and a driving force behind Ireland’s national art institutions.
