The Meeting on the Turret Stairs – Collector’s Edition Fine Art Print

A museum-grade reproduction of Ireland’s most beloved painting, crafted for collectors who value heritage, craftsmanship, and cultural legacy. Faithfully produced using archival materials and colour-accurate giclée methods, this edition brings the emotional depth of Frederic William Burton’s masterpiece into your home.

About the Artwork

The Meeting on the Turret Stairs (1864) is one of the most iconic works in Irish art and is held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Ireland. Voted “Ireland’s Favourite Painting,” it depicts the final, silent encounter between two tragic lovers, Hellelil and Hildebrand. Burton’s refined technique, influenced by Pre-Raphaelite principles, creates an atmosphere of tenderness, restraint, and profound emotional tension.

This watercolour was inspired by a medieval Danish ballad translated by Burton’s friend Whitley Stokes and published in Fraser’s Magazine in 1855. The ballad tells of Hellelil, who falls in love with her personal guard, Hildebrand, Prince of Engelland. When her father disapproves, he commands his sons to slay the prince. Hildebrand kills all but the youngest brother—spared at Hellelil’s request—yet ultimately dies from his wounds. Instead of depicting violence, Burton chose to illustrate the lovers’ final, wordless embrace on the turret stairs.

Novelist George Eliot praised Burton’s ability to elevate the subject matter, writing that “the artist has raised it to the highest pitch of refined emotion.” Fine brushwork reminiscent of miniature painting reveals Burton’s meticulous method; he often executed numerous preparatory studies before producing a finished watercolour.
