About Harry Clarke & the Artwork

Harry Clarke was one of the foremost figures of the Celtic Revival and the Irish Arts and Crafts movement in the early twentieth century. Deeply influenced by Symbolist aesthetics, he drew on literature, medieval legend, and spiritual themes to create imagery of extraordinary intricacy, drama, and imaginative power. A master across multiple media—illustration, stained glass, book design, and decorative arts—he achieved particular acclaim for his stained-glass panels, which remain among the most celebrated works in modern Irish art.

The Song of the Mad Prince is inspired by a poem by Walter de la Mare and shows Clarke at his most experimental. In the original miniature panel, he explored innovative stained-glass techniques, aciding and plating together double layers of differently coloured glass to achieve unusual, jewel-like tonal effects. The finished glasswork was then set into a walnut cabinet created by Dublin furniture maker James Hicks, exemplifying the collaborative spirit of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement.

Provenance & Exhibition History

The original stained-glass panel has a distinguished provenance. It was commissioned by Thomas Bodkin in consultation with the artist and later passed by descent to his daughter, Mrs Patrick Jameson (née Elizabeth Bodkin), Dublin, in 1961. In 1987 it was acquired for a private collection and has since been recognised as a key work within Clarke’s output and within the story of twentieth-century Irish art.

Over the decades, the work has been included in several important exhibitions, including:

  • Studio Exhibition, 33 North Frederick Street, Dublin (1918)
  • 6th Exhibition, Arts and Crafts Society of Ireland, Dublin (1921)
  • Thomas Bodkin Collection, Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin (1962)
  • Harry Clarke, Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin; Ulster Museum, Belfast; Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Cork (1979–1980)
  • The Fantastic in Art: Images of the Supernatural and Uncanny, National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (4 April – 12 August 2007)
