Abstract

Irish abstraction did not arrive gently. It was carried back from Paris in the 1920s by two women who had studied under Albert Gleizes, and it was met in Dublin with open hostility.

What followed is a century of Irish painters working without a subject you can name — Mainie Jellett's rotated, translated geometry; Evie Hone's move from cubism into sacred glass; and the contemporary painters still working the same ground in colour and mark. This collection gathers the abstract and modernist end of Irish art in one place, from the 1920s to now.
