Collection: George Barret

George Barret RA (c.1728–1784) was born in Dublin and became one of the most celebrated landscape painters of his generation. His dramatic depictions of mountains, forests, lakes, waterfalls, and wild scenery helped establish landscape painting as a major artistic genre in Britain and Ireland.

After moving to London in 1762, Barret quickly gained recognition among the leading collectors and patrons of the period. He became a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768 and exhibited alongside many of the most important artists of the eighteenth century. His travels throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and the Lake District inspired many of his finest works.

Barret's paintings capture the power and grandeur of the natural world. Influenced by both direct observation and the ideals of the emerging Romantic movement, his landscapes combine atmospheric light, sweeping views, and a deep appreciation for nature's beauty.

Today his work is held in major collections including the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, the British Museum, and leading museums throughout Britain and Ireland. His legacy remains central to the story of Irish landscape painting.
