About the Artist

Mildred Anne Butler was a trailblazing Irish artist renowned for her sensitive depictions of nature, rural life and animal subjects. Born at Kilmurry, near Thomastown in County Kilkenny, Butler drew lifelong inspiration from the beauty of her surroundings, becoming celebrated for her poetic portrayals of the Irish countryside.

Associated with the Newlyn School, she was a pioneer of the en plein air style, capturing the immediacy of light and atmosphere directly from nature. Butler gained international recognition during her lifetime, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy and playing a long, active role in the Water Colour Society of Ireland from 1892. She was elected an associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1896 and a full member in 1937 — a remarkable achievement for a woman artist of the era.

Her works were highly sought-after by royal and aristocratic patrons, including Queen Mary of Teck, and were acquired by prestigious collections such as the Tate Gallery through the Chantrey Bequest. Today, Butler is celebrated as a key figure in Irish art history, her legacy honoured in over 400 surviving works and commemorated on an An Post postage stamp.
