She fought to give Irish stories back to Irish people—and this is how Orpen saw her, quiet and unstoppable.
Augusta Lady Gregory by William Orpen
William Orpen's portrait captures Lady Gregory in 1904, at the height of her power as playwright, folklorist, and co-founder of the Abbey Theatre. This is the woman who collected Irish folklore from the West, who wrote plays that moved audiences, who refused to let Irish culture fade. Bring home the face of the Literary Revival.
About the Artist
William Orpen (1878–1931) was Ireland's most celebrated portrait painter, trusted by the country's cultural leaders and international figures alike. Born in Dublin, he studied at the Metropolitan School of Art before becoming the portraitist of choice for Ireland's intelligentsia. Orpen had a gift for revealing character in a glance—not flattery, but truth. He painted Lady Gregory during her most influential years, and it shows.
