Edward Gay was born in Belfast in 1837. He left Ireland as a child during the Famine, crossed the Atlantic, and spent the rest of his long life — he lived to ninety-one — painting the landscapes of New York State with the patience and attention of someone who never took green fields for granted.

Hillside (1908) is one of his finest works. The view opens wide — gold grass in the foreground, dark trees holding the right edge, the mountains dissolving into mist beyond. The sky is enormous and unsettled. Gay has painted the moment before weather arrives, the light still warm on the hillside, everything about to change.

Gay was a member of the National Academy of Design and painted murals for public libraries in Mt. Vernon and Bronxville, New York. His work is held in galleries and museums across the United States. He is one of the great overlooked Irish voices in American art.

Printed on archival paper — matte, uncoated, natural off-white, 250 gsm, acid-free and FSC-certified. Made to last without yellowing.
