Self Portrait – William Orpen

Orpen painted himself more often, and more inventively, than almost any artist of his era — as sportsman, as jockey, as man in a mirror, as working painter. The self-portraits are where his wit and his doubt live side by side: technically dazzling, never quite comfortable, always watching. This print reproduces one of those direct, unsparing self-examinations — the painter looking at himself the way he looked at everyone else.

Sir William Orpen (1878-1931), born in Stillorgan, Co Dublin, trained at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin and the Slade School in London, becoming one of the most successful portrait painters of his generation and an official war artist in the First World War. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
