Layered blocks of blue, grey, white and warm ochre interlock here to create a lyrical sense of motion, with curved arcs meeting vertical bars and stepped forms. The structure comes from Jellett's systematic cubist method — translation and rotation of forms rather than free improvisation — which is what gives the composition its architectural calm.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
