Abstract (1930) by Mainie Jellett – Canvas Print
This 1930 gouache brings together vivid colour and geometric precision — a radical statement in an Ireland still wary of abstraction. Built through the systematic method of translation and rotation Jellett developed with Albert Gleizes, it belongs to the pioneering years when she was establishing abstract painting in Ireland.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
