Your grandmother probably never saw an Irish woman paint like this—bold, geometric, unafraid.
Abstract by Mainie Jellett
This 1930 gouache work explodes with vivid colour and geometric precision, a radical statement in an Ireland still clinging to tradition. Jellett was painting abstraction when most of Dublin was scandalized by it. Now you can own a piece of the defiance that shaped Irish modernism.
About the Artist
Mainie Jellett (1897–1944) trained under Cubist pioneers in Paris and came home to shock Ireland awake. While conservative critics dismissed abstraction as "un-Irish," she painted anyway—pure colour, pure form, no apology. She co-founded the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and spent her short life fighting for Irish artists to be taken seriously on the world stage. Her work proved that modernism had an Irish voice.
