Breton Boy in Profile (1893) — Roderic O'Conor

Painted in Brittany during O'Conor's most experimental period, this portrait marks his break from academic tradition into the vanguard of European modernism. Influenced by Van Gogh — whose work he knew through the dealer Theo van Gogh — and by the painters gathered at Pont-Aven, O'Conor set down unblended strokes of vivid pink, green and ochre, building a portrait that is both raw and direct.

Roderic O'Conor (1860–1940) was born in Roscommon and became one of the few Irish painters fully embedded in French Post-Impressionism. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
