Louis le Brocquy spent decades painting what he called "Presences" — ghostly, dissolving head portraits of Yeats, Joyce and Beckett that tried to capture consciousness rather than likeness. He's also the reason most people have seen an image from the Táin Bó Cúailnge: his 1969 illustrations for Thomas Kinsella's translation became the visual identity of that epic for a generation of Irish readers.
