A steam train leaves Ludgate Hill station and trails blue smoke into the evening sky, the dome of St Paul's rising beyond the viaduct. Painted in 1887, Ludgate, Evening looks down Fleet Street from its north side — John O'Connor's portrait of Victorian London at the moment it turned fully modern.
Beneath the viaduct the street is alive with horse-drawn carriages, omnibuses and newspaper vendors calling the latest headlines, the church of St Martin's off to one side. O'Connor balances the vibrancy of modern life against the majesty of the old city.
O'Connor, known for his command of perspective and drama, came from a background in theatrical scene painting, which gives this topographical view its cinematic quality. Ludgate, Evening was praised in its own time as one of his finest works.
