By 1921, Lavery's years in Tangier were ending, and he and Hazel spent a month on the French Riviera. Walking a steep cliff path down to a secluded beach near La Turbie, he found the subject for this painting — moored dinghies in a still blue bay, rendered in some of the deepest cobalt he ever used. He called it one of his most abstract compositions.

He wasn't painting alone. His pupil Winston Churchill stood beside him on the same overhanging path, and when Lavery finished, Churchill set up his own easel and painted his own version of the same view — a picture later catalogued as Coast Scene near Cannes. Churchill called Lavery his first and essential master, and later wrote that Lavery painted Riviera sunlight "in brilliant and beautiful colour with the ease of long mastery." Lavery's painting, made in a single sitting with no visible correction, is the reason Churchill's own attempt exists at all.
