The Story
Barra Ó Maoláin is a contemporary Irish artist and the house painter of Buy Irish Art — a Dublin-based artist working in acrylic inks, whose original work is exclusive to this gallery. Where the rest of our collection revives Ireland's great painters of the past, Ó Maoláin is Irish art being made right now.
His work runs in two directions. One is the Irish landscape — the Antrim glens around Cushendall and Cushendun, the drama of Murlough Bay and Fair Head, the lakes of Connemara, and the particular colour of the Atlantic when the weather is turning — painted with a bold, expressive touch and a genuine feeling for place.
The other is Ireland's cultural memory: portraits of the writers, patriots and musicians who shaped the country — Seamus Heaney and Sean O'Casey, Patrick Pearse and Countess Markievicz, Luke Kelly, Rory Gallagher, Shane MacGowan and Christy Moore. Grounded in a real relationship with the Irish land and its people, his prints are original, contemporary, and available nowhere else.
