1798 Dublin Map - Wilson's Modern Plan of the City and Environs Print

This is Dublin on the first of June, 1798 — five weeks into the Rising — hand-coloured street by street, with the city's buildings washed in red, streets still only intended left faint, and the Earl of Meath's Liberty picked out in green. The Grand and Royal Canals loop the city, the new docks push east, Gandon's Custom House — not seven years finished — sits engraved as a vignette in the corner, and the Clontarf slobs are marked simply 'covered at high water'. The plan is dedicated to Frances, Countess Camden, wife of the Lord Lieutenant then facing the rebellion.

The map was published by the Dublin publisher William Wilson and engraved by Benjamin Baker of Islington, one of the finest map engravers of the day. The original hand-coloured sheet, in its folding panels, is in the National Gallery of Ireland.
