A View towards Wicklow from Mount Kennedy House, County Wicklow, in ink, graphite and wash on paper, by Christopher Machell, 1787.

Great stands of oak and beech fill the foreground of the demesne, and between them the land opens to low blue hills running toward Wicklow. Machell drew every leaf mass in fine pen strokes and left the open pasture almost bare, a sunlit gap in the trees. The sheet measures about 26 × 38 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north. His wash drawings are among the National Gallery of Ireland's best records of how those places looked.
