Barony of Idrone, County Carlow c.1600 Map by Van den Keere Print

Carlow four centuries ago: 'Caterlagh', 'Laghlyn' and 'Old Laghlyn' strung along the Barogh fluvius — the Barrow — with dozens of Bally- townlands abbreviated to a scribal 'B.' and every settlement marked by its own miniature tower. This map print of the barony of Idrone is among the earliest printed maps of any Irish county district, and 'Septentrio' — north — sits at the left edge, so the barony lies on its side in the old manner. It was contested ground, too: Idrone is the barony Sir Peter Carew laid claim to in 1568, a land case that helped set the south-east alight.

The plate is signed Petrus Kaerius caelavit — engraved by Pieter van den Keere (1571–c.1646), the Flemish engraver of the circle of Jodocus Hondius, his brother-in-law, who cut it for his miniature series of maps of the British Isles around 1600. The original impression is in the National Gallery of Ireland.
