Boulders in a River, in watercolour on paper, by Frederic William Burton.

Pale water runs past white boulders toward a green hillside and a line of purple hills, under a sky of soft grey bands. Burton leaves the paper bare for the stones and the shallows, so the light seems to come from the sheet itself — a landscape sketched on a sheet about 34.8 × 50.4 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

Frederic William Burton (1816–1900), born in County Clare, was the finest Irish watercolourist of his century and later director of the National Gallery in London. The Meeting on the Turret Stairs, his best-known work, hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
