Bray from Bray Head, County Wicklow, in watercolour on paper, by John Henry Campbell.

From the slopes of Bray Head the village spreads out below, its church spire at the centre, with the long curve of the bay running north to Killiney Hill and ships riding at anchor offshore. A woman drives cattle along the path in the foreground. The sheet measures about 37 × 48 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

John Henry Campbell (1757–1829) was a Dublin landscape painter who worked mostly in watercolour, recording the edges of the city, Dublin Bay and the Wicklow valleys around the turn of the nineteenth century. His daughter Cecilia Margaret Campbell also became a landscape painter.
