This is a print of the Celtic Tree of Life, the Crann Bethadh — a circular design in which the roots and branches of a tree mirror each other and close into a ring of knotwork. It is worth being straight about what it is: the circular knotwork tree is a design of the twentieth-century Celtic revival, not a motif attested in medieval Irish manuscripts or stone carving. What is genuinely old is the standing of trees in Irish law: the eighth-century text Bretha Comaithchesa graded twenty-eight trees by rank, with oak, hazel, holly, yew, ash, Scots pine and wild apple as the seven nobles of the wood, and set fines for damaging them.
