Cork lies spread along its river below a harbour crowded with masts in this 1799 aquatint print — the city near the height of its Atlantic provisioning trade, when Cork butter and beef supplied fleets across the ocean. Roberts takes the view from the high ground: cattle in the foreground fields, church spires pricking the skyline, the bridge arching over the Lee, and the river winding out toward the great anchorage beyond.
Thomas Sautelle Roberts (c.1760–1826), born in Waterford, trained as an architect before turning to landscape painting. Between 1795 and 1799 he published twelve aquatint views of Ireland's southern cities and rivers — this plate engraved in London by Samuel Alken. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1789 and was among the founding members of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1823.
A statement piece for a hall or office, and a proud gift for any Cork household. Every print is open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide, backed by verified customer reviews.
