Connemara Mountains, in graphite and watercolour on paper, by George Petrie, 1820s.

A dark peak rises over a lough in purple shadow, storm cloud dragging across the summits and the bog in the foreground streaked with rust and green. Petrie travelled the west in the 1820s, and here he paints Connemara as weather as much as land. The sheet measures about 16 × 22 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

George Petrie (1790–1866), born in Dublin, was a landscape painter and antiquarian who travelled Ireland recording its ruins, round towers and castles. He also collected traditional Irish music, and his watercolours are among the most valued early records of the Irish landscape. The National Gallery of Ireland holds a large group of his work.
