Dromana on the Blackwater by Thomas Sautelle Roberts Art Print

A single sail drifts down the glassy Blackwater below Dromana in this 1799 aquatint print — the ancient seat of the FitzGeralds of the Decies just visible on its wooded height. Cattle wade in the shallows, two figures watch from the bank, and the river slides between hills of unbroken oak: the west Waterford river country at its most serene. Roberts engraved the plate under the old spelling, 'Drumana'.

Thomas Sautelle Roberts (c.1760–1826), born in Waterford, trained as an architect before turning to landscape painting. Between 1795 and 1799 he published twelve aquatint views of Ireland's southern cities and rivers — this plate engraved in London by Samuel Alken. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1789 and was among the founding members of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1823.
