Dublin Bay from Blackrock Road, County Dublin, in watercolour on paper, by John Henry Campbell.

Beyond a fringe of trees and open fields, Dublin Bay lies silver under a high grey sky with Howth stretched along the far shore. In the foreground a cart and horses have stopped on the road while two figures sit on the bank. The sheet measures about 38 × 49 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

John Henry Campbell (1757–1829) was a Dublin landscape painter who worked mostly in watercolour, recording the edges of the city, Dublin Bay and the Wicklow valleys around the turn of the nineteenth century. His daughter Cecilia Margaret Campbell also became a landscape painter.
