Dublin from Phoenix Park, in ink, wash and watercolour on paper, by Francis Place, 1698.
The Liffey curves away toward a low city of spires and towers, with ships at the far quays, a weir and mill buildings in the middle distance and a figure on the path in front. Place drew Dublin in 1698, more than half a century before the Georgian city, and this is one of the earliest views of it drawn from life. The sheet measures about 28 × 45 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
Francis Place (1647–1728) was a Yorkshire draughtsman and etcher who travelled through Ireland in 1698 and 1699, drawing Dublin, Drogheda and Kilkenny as he went. His pen-and-wash sheets are some of the earliest surviving views of Irish towns drawn from life, and the National Gallery of Ireland holds a group of them.
