The lighthouse stands on its timber-braced pier at the left while fishing boats and sailing vessels lie on a flat, silvery sea, and two men work a small rowing boat in the foreground. Beyond them the ships and smoke of the port, and the city itself, fade into haze. It is a quiet working harbour in warm sepia tones. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
Jonathan Fisher (1735–1809) was an Irish landscape painter who made his name publishing views of Irish scenery as sepia aquatints. His prints record Dublin, its harbour and its countryside as they looked in the 1790s. The National Gallery of Ireland holds a group of his views.
