Eden Vale by Thomas Sautelle Roberts Art Print

A river in spate tears through the gorge at Eden Vale in this 1799 aquatint print, past a battlemented tower wedged among the crags. A thatched cottage sends up its thread of smoke, a horse and cart wait by the little fortified bridge, and cattle stand to drink in the still pool below the falls — wild Ireland and settled Ireland held in a single frame. It is the most romantic plate of the twelve views Roberts published of the Irish south.

Thomas Sautelle Roberts (c.1760–1826), born in Waterford, trained as an architect before turning to landscape painting. Between 1795 and 1799 he published twelve aquatint views of Ireland's southern cities and rivers — this plate engraved in London by Samuel Alken. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1789 and was among the founding members of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1823.
