Edith Best, Musician by Sarah Cecilia Harrison | Irish Art Print

A quick, sure drawing of a woman’s head and shoulders — the face caught in a few soft, certain lines — Harrison’s study of the pianist Edith Best, née Oldham.

Edith Oldham (1865–1950) won one of the first scholarships to the Royal College of Music in London, taught piano at the Royal Irish Academy of Music for forty-five years, and was honorary secretary of the Feis Ceoil from its founding. In 1906 she married the Celtic scholar Richard Irvine Best, whom Harrison also painted. The drawing is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.3042).
