Eileen, Her First Communion by John Lavery | Irish Art Print

A girl in a white communion dress, a long veil falling from a crown of flowers, her eyes lowered — Sir John Lavery’s portrait of his daughter Eileen on the day of her First Communion, painted in 1901.

Lavery (1856–1941), Belfast-born, painted it while James McNeill Whistler was staying with him, and the older painter’s influence is everywhere: the picture is built almost entirely from the shifting whites and greys of the gown and veil. It is painted in oil on board and is in the collection of the Ulster Museum, Belfast (BELUM.U80).
