Fanad Head sits where the Fanad Peninsula meets Lough Swilly and the open Atlantic beyond it — one of only a handful of Irish lighthouses that still turns exactly as it did when it was lit in 1817, built in response to the wreck of HMS Saldanha six years earlier. In 2016, Travel + Leisure named it among the world's most beautiful lighthouses.
