William Makepeace Thackeray toured Glenariff in 1842 and likened it to the Alps — the comparison stuck, and the glen has been called the Queen of the Glens of Antrim ever since. This painting finds it at its most theatrical: water dropping through moss-dark stone, the whole glen closing in like a green hand.
Ó Maoláin worked from the falls themselves, building up the layers of stone and spray until the water seems to move. It's one of nine glens that cut through this stretch of County Antrim, and the one most people picture when they think of it.
