Henry Joy McCracken by Sarah Cecilia Harrison | Irish Art Print

Henry Joy McCracken, the Belfast United Irishman who led the rising in Antrim in the summer of 1798 — painted in 1926 by Sarah Cecilia Harrison, his grandniece, nearly 130 years after his death.

McCracken was born on Belfast’s High Street in 1767, into a family of Presbyterian manufacturers, and was in the confidence of the United Irishmen from their founding in 1791. On 7 June 1798 he led the attack on Antrim town; the rising failed, and he was taken at Carrickfergus a month later. On 17 July he was hanged in front of the Market House — on the street where he was born. His sister, Mary Ann McCracken, walked with him to the gallows. The painting hangs in the Ulster Museum, Belfast (BELUM.U49).
