James Clarence Mangan after his death, in black and red chalk on paper, by Frederic William Burton, 1849.
Eyes closed, hair swept back as if by wind, the poet's profile fills the sheet in black chalk, with red only in the lips and the shadows of the face. Burton drew James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849), the poet of ‘Dark Rosaleen’, in the Meath Hospital in Dublin after his death, then signed and dated the sheet — about 29.3 × 37.8 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
