Notre-Dame-des-Arts, Pont-de-l’Arche by John Lavery | Irish Art Print

The long nave of a Normandy parish church, seen from the west end — stone piers and arches running away in quiet procession towards the choir. Sir John Lavery painted it at Pont-de-l’Arche, on the Seine above Rouen, probably in 1897–98.

Notre-Dame-des-Arts was begun around 1500 and finished in 1564, one of the last Flamboyant Gothic churches built along that stretch of the Seine. Lavery (1856–1941), Belfast-born and by then one of the leading Glasgow Boys, painted it small and upright, in oil on a canvas of 35 × 25 cm — a study of the church’s long perspective rather than its carved ornament. The painting is in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland (NG 2863), presented by Richard Woodward in 2005.
