Kildare Cathedral, County Kildare, in graphite and wash on paper, by George Petrie, 1819.

The roofless nave of Saint Brigid's Cathedral stands open to the sky, its tall pointed windows empty and its squat tower rising at the right, with small figures among the graves. Petrie drew it in 1819, decades before the cathedral was restored. The sheet measures about 19 × 27 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

George Petrie (1790–1866), born in Dublin, was a landscape painter and antiquarian who travelled Ireland recording its ruins, round towers and castles. He also collected traditional Irish music, and his watercolours are among the most valued early records of the Irish landscape. The National Gallery of Ireland holds a large group of his work.
