The King's Hospital, or Blue-Coat School, on Blackhall Place, in a watercolour by James Malton, 1790s.
Two steeples, a pale stone front and a squad of red-coated soldiers drilling on the lawn while a lady in a wide hat and a carriage pass by — Malton fills the foreground with small, deadpan incident. The King's Hospital was founded in 1669 to educate the sons of Dublin's tradesmen, and this building was raised in the 1770s. The sheet measures about 52.1 × 74.9 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
