Lismore Castle by Thomas Sautelle Roberts Art Print

Lismore Castle rises straight from the wooded rock above the Blackwater in this 1790s aquatint print — the castle as it stood before the nineteenth-century remodelling that gave it today's fairy-tale outline. Roberts drew it from the river bank: fishing nets slung to dry beside a moored sailing boat, two figures at the water's edge, the old bridge arching over the river at the castle's foot. Robert Boyle, the father of modern chemistry, was born within these walls in 1627.

Thomas Sautelle Roberts (c.1760–1826), born in Waterford, trained as an architect before turning to landscape painting. Between 1795 and 1799 he published twelve aquatint views of Ireland's southern cities and rivers — this plate engraved in London by Samuel Alken. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1789 and was among the founding members of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1823.
