Lovers' Leap on the River Dargle, County Wicklow, with Bray Head beyond, in ink and wash on paper, by Christopher Machell, 1787.

Inside a dark oval of oak woods a pale crag rises from the glen of the Dargle, and far off the blunt shape of Bray Head shows against the sky. Lovers' Leap was one of the sights every visitor to the Dargle came for, and Machell wrote his own note about the view beside the drawing, dated 1787. The sheet measures about 16 × 23 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north. His wash drawings are among the National Gallery of Ireland's best records of how those places looked.
