Hazel Lavery at her easel beneath a wide parasol, painting out of doors in the Moroccan sun and looking straight back at us — Sir John Lavery’s full-length portrait of his wife, painted in 1910.

They had met at the artists’ colony of Beg-Meil in Brittany in 1904 and married in 1909, and the picture has the loose, bright handling of the French painters he admired. Sir Hugh Lane gave it to Dublin’s Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in 1910, the year it was painted; the canvas, over two metres tall, is in the collection of the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin.
