Self-Portrait by Sarah Cecilia Harrison | Irish Art Print

Dark hair drawn back, a black dress with a small spray of flowers pinned at the throat, and a level, unhurried gaze out of a deep green ground — Sarah Cecilia Harrison paints herself exactly as she painted everyone else: plainly, closely, and without a trace of flattery.

Harrison was born at Holywood, Co. Down, in 1863, trained at the Slade School in London under Alphonse Legros, and set up her studio in Dublin in 1889. In 1912 she became the first woman elected to Dublin Corporation, heading the poll in the South City ward as an independent — a painter who spent her public life campaigning for the city’s poor and for Hugh Lane’s gallery of modern art. The painting is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.1279).
