A narrow band of low sun breaks under a lid of heavy cloud, with a dark strip of land and water below. The pastel is tiny, only 8.5 × 13.7 cm: a whole sky caught in a few rubbed strokes on warm beige paper. It is in the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

William Mulready (1786–1863), born in Ennis, County Clare, trained in London and became one of the best-known genre painters of the Royal Academy. Alongside his finished scenes he made small studies from nature such as this one. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
