A young woman reclines in a skiff, the water catching the light of an Edwardian summer afternoon. Lavery returned to boating scenes throughout his career, and this small oil is among the most intimate of them.
Summertime (1904) shows Nancy La Primaudaye at rest in a punt, likely painted on the Thames or at Ranelagh Gardens in London, one of Lavery's favourite haunts. He gave her the picture as a wedding gift that same year, inscribing it with his best wishes. The loose, spontaneous handling reflects the freedom Lavery found away from the formality of his portrait commissions — a mood of quiet ease he returned to again and again in later river scenes.
Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) was born in Belfast, trained in Glasgow and Paris, and became one of Ireland's most celebrated painters. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
